ELEGANT HALLOWEEN DECORATING THAT IS GOBLIN-APPROVED

Decorating for Halloween doesn't have to be juvenile or "Over the Top" spooky. By combining traditional elements in Fall/Halloween colors, you can create an elegant look that is also Goblin-approved!
Check out my own staircase creation this year. I used evergreen garland in black doubled up for "bulk". To that, I wove in a vibrant orange, red & yellow fall leave garland. For an interesting look and to save a little money, I like to sway my garland only at the posts. I added in fall picks of beaded gourds and nuts along with sprays of berries. Finally, hand-made fall color bows finish off the look. You could take this a step further and add in spiders, skulls or other spooky tidbits. But I like it just the way it is!

Today marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. It was established on April 22, 1970 to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.

Did you know that, by the year 2015, it is estimated that we will spend $121.7 Billion dollars to refurbish our homes with new furniture? And as we do, we will throw away used furniture and packaging from those new purchases contributing over 10 Million TONS of waste into our landfills annually. The importance of environmentally conscious choices, including interior decoration, takes on an even greater urgency given these staggering statistics.

Thank you for being mindful that the choices you make in your own home affect the "home" we all share! Happy Earth Day 2010!

DECORATING IN TWO DIMENSIONS

Two dimensional artwork can be predictable and stale. Not that there is anything wrong with a framed picture or art piece here and there. But don't be so repetitive by filling every space with flat, often lifeless two dimensional art that lacks character and movement.

WINDOW TREATMENTS ARE THE JEWELRY IN A ROOM

Think of window treatments as the jewelry in a room. No matter how complete the look, "Plain Jane" windows diminish the visual value of a space. When budget and architecture allow, hang window treatments and valances higher than the actual window to give the illusion of higher ceilings.

Ready made draperies at most Big Box stores may come in more than one length. Adding another foot to standard 84" panels can make all the difference in the world.

Check out this office space that I completed this week. Lined, self-pleating 95" panels from Target add height and balance out the tall bookcases.

AN EASTER WITHOUT PASTELS

Maybe it's because I'm a guy. Who knows? But, I'm just not a big fan of all the puke-y pastel colors that flood our lives this time of year. I'm not saying they don't evoke thoughts of spring and flowers and such. I just find them sickeningly sweet when used overindulgently.

I for one am a fan of the more subdued touches that remind of rebirth and renewal. I call them the 3 B's of spring decorating. They are: Bunnies, Birds and Baskets.

I like adding these elements into decor but in more subdued variations like the ones you see in the photo. It's easy to incorporate these touches into just about any design motif without feeling overwhelmed by masses of pink, teal and yellow.

Go ahead and throw a few small flowers into the basket if you must. But enjoy the simplicity of the design. I think you'll appreciate the same seasonal tug to your heartstrings without opening up the pastel flood gates.

A SEASON FOR GIVING

The spirit of the holidays reminds that it is better to give than receive. And this time of year, giving to and doing for others takes on an even more special meaning.

As I reflect back on a year, like any other, filled with both challenges and blessings, I am thankful for the God-given eye to share the gift of beautiful surroundings with my clients. And while I know how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day stresses of running a business...what I love most about decorating is sharing a gift that I know keeps giving long after I've cashed the check or sent a Thank You card.

As I look around my own home this holiday season, I'm enveloped by the things that bring me happiness and comfort throughout the year. And for a moment, I am reminded of the decorating transformations I've accomplished during the past year. I see clients sharing their refreshed spaces with family and friends enjoying special moments filled with joy and laughter. Somehow I know that the changes made are adding happiness this holiday season through the energy of beautiful surroundings.

As I anticipate the New Year and the exciting possibilities in store for me in 2010, I resolve to stay mindful of the joy I bring to others with my gift...a God-given gift that keeps on giving....the gift of beautiful spaces.

TWELVE TIPS FOR A TERRIFIC CHRISTMAS TREE

Thanksgiving will herald in the festivities of the Christmas season. It'll be time to start decking the halls and walls with those family favorites that give us the warm & fuzzies this special time of year. Of course, Christmas wouldn't be complete without the centerpiece of holiday traditions... the Christmas tree.

Here are Twelve of my favorite tips to help you to create a stunning tree this Christmas:

1- Use an old sheet with furniture slides under your tree stand to move the tree more easily and help catch any shed needles from both real and artificial trees. (fold over the edges and tuck underneath tree skirt.... then unfold and use for cleanup after Christmas)

2-Both artificial and live trees, require "fluffing" before decorating. Flatten branches on artificial trees to accommodate larger ornaments. Live trees may require a bit of trimming to create these pockets.

3-Bend artificial branch tips slightly upward to support ornaments and to mimic a tree's natural growth pattern.

4-If you still string lights on your tree, consider white lights for "themed" trees. But for depth and visual interest on family-style trees, layer white lights inside the tree while stringing a few colored lights on the outer branches.

5-Consider inserting sturdy willow or similar branches spray-painted white, silver or gold into the tree at regular intervals. Not only will they add movement to the tree but create perfect showcase branches for those "special" collected ornaments.

6-Color themes can serve as a base even for family-style trees. Pick 3 coordinating colors like cream, red and copper and then mix in collectible ornaments after the "filler" ornaments are placed.

7-Decorate the tree starting with lights, then ribbons and garlands, then any floral embellishments ending with ornaments starting with the largest and then adding progressively smaller ones.

8-Tuck larger ornaments back into the tree to create layers of depth. Just as garlands should gently swag between branches, ornaments shouldn't look like they've been poured over the tree only resting on branch tips.

9-Following your color theme, use a variety of ornament shapes, sizes and textures for visual interest. Icicle style ornaments should always be left for outer-most branch tips so they swing freely.

10-While many families nostalgically save the tree topper for last, I suggest placing it first. Especially if the tree is of any size, it will be easier to anchor it in place without worrying about damaging your fully decorated masterpiece.

11-Heirloom toppers can be given even more presence by adding bows, streamers, sparkling picks, branches and other items that protrude from the tree and create a fireworks effect at the top of the tree.

12-After the holidays, disassemble your creation the the same way you assembled it but reversing the steps. And don't forget to recycle cut trees by locating a center near you. Many municipalities have programs to mulch discarded trees or use them for habitat creation.

Chances are that decorating a tree is no mystery to you. Either it is one of your favorite holiday family traditions or its the chore you dread more than long lines at Wal-Mart. Either way, I hope these tips get your creative juices flowing to wow your family this holiday season.

REDESIGN IS GREEN DESIGN AT CCGT

One of the nice things about redesign is the positive impact it has on the planet. By reusing, re-purposing and restyling a homeowner's existing furniture, art and accessories, I help keep these items out of the municipal waste stream and landfills.

Last night, I had the opportunity to present the concept Redesign is Green Design to a group of about 25 individuals at the Chicago Center for Green Technology. The hour long presentation was well received by the group which included homeowners, interior designers, decorators and other professionals.

Redesign, by the very nature of the process, supports the three fundamentals of sustainability: reuse, renew and recycle.

In a bruised economy, people are trending toward more sustainable lifestyles by reusing things they already own. And if you consider we will still spend almost $122 billion on new household furnishings by 2015 creating over 8 million tons of furniture waste, redesign makes a lot of sense on numerous levels.

If you're ready to embrace a more sustainable, "green" lifestyle, consider redesigning your spaces using what you already own giving you a whole new decorator look without a negative impact on the planet.

DECORATING FOR FALL

Here in the Chicago area, we're starting to see the first signs of leaves turning. The goldenrod is in full bloom as my allergies are the first to let me know. Thistle and grasses have gone to seed ... a sure sign that snow will be flying before we're ready for it.

And although we've had what I think has been lackluster summer weather this year, September has helped to make up for it with almost picture perfect blue skies, moderate temps and low humidity. When the goldenrod starts blooming and the thistle goes to seed, I get in the mood for fall and probably my favorite time of year for seasonal home decor.

The wonderful thing about fall accents is that they blend very well with any design style. Even more wonderful is that these same fall touches transition easily over the next several months with just a few tweeks for the fall holidays. If you've started with fall leaves, dried grasses, harvested fruits and veggies as a base, it's nothing to add the appropriate accents to embellish them for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

I just finished throwing these fall florals together. As you can see, I like to craft floral arrangements with a certain formality that also look somewhat organic and haphazard. I try to mix colors and textures for visual interest. For inspiration, I imagine walking through an overgrown field this time of year collecting samples from all nature has to offer...then incorporating them into a single arrangement.

I hope these pictures get you in the mood to start your own fall floral fun. By adding seasonal accents, you can get a whole new look for your home without breaking a sweat.

Nothing replaces good old fashioned decorating tools! What would we do without color wheels, measuring tapes, levels and all our samples? But technology does help with ways to make our lives easier..... Laser levels have taken the guess work out of hanging artwork. Drafting boards have given way to CAD. Digital rooms can be washed with every possible color. The list gets longer every day.

With the advent of smart phone technology, decorating tools have taken another leap into the future. Cool Apps are popping up daily to help professional and novice decorators attack those all too common decorating dilemmas.

FINALLY...SOME GOOD NEWS ON REAL ESTATE

Finally, in case you didn't read it already, I thought I'd pass on some good news for homeowners, realtors and us stagers...

According to the Associated Press, earlier this month, the government reported that new home construction rose to the highest level since last fall with new homes sales rising almost 11 percent in June.

And data reported last week showed home resales rose almost 4 percent in June which was the third straight monthly increase. They report that the last time sales rose so dramatically was in December 2000.

I knew something was going on since my business suddenly shifted from redesign to more real estate consults and stagings. Now if we can keep the momentum going into the fall and winter.

Just thought it would be nice to focus on some good news for a change!

DOES STAGING MAKES A DIFFERENCE?

It's no surprise that the real estate market has seen better days. Double digit property value increases had us all spoiled; so this downturn has been particularly painful. Thankfully, I'm starting to see signs of improvement. I have had several of my staged listings sell or go under contract in the last couple of weeks and my realtor partners are busy as ever.

Amazingly, I continue to hear that staging really doesn't make a difference in the sale of a property. Of course, I take great exception to that since half of my business is staging. But more than that, I think sellers and stagers across the country have seen results to the contrary first hand.

I never disillusion my seller clients into believing that staging will result in a rapid sale. But they know when I'm done that their property, whether vacant or occupied, now shows to its full potential. They understand that, in real estate, it just as much about selling the "dream" as it is about selling the property.

DECORATING WITH OLD GLORY

Where does the time go? Another year half over and here we are again celebrating our country's Independence Day. Red, White and Blue dot the country as people use the U.S. Flag to decorate their homes and businesses for the holiday. We've all used the flag from time to time in our decorating projects, especially for the 4th.

But, did you know that using the flag for decorative purposes is actually regulated by Federal Law?

The United States Flag Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the flag of the United States. There is no penalty for failure to comply with it and it is not widely enforced — indeed, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that punitive enforcement would conflict with the First Amendment right to freedom of speech. As a decorator, I found these particular rules interesting:

The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything
The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

It's easy to forget the many freedoms we enjoy living in a country where the freedoms of speech and expression are among the most cherished. The ability to decorate our homes in any way we choose could actually be considered one such freedom (of expression). Maybe it's not too much to ask to show a little respect for "Old Glory" and those who've fought defending our freedoms when we decorate!

DECORATING FOR DAD ON FATHER'S DAY

You know.... working with a mostly female clientele for over 10 years in various media, I think I have a pretty good grasp on what women want when they decorate their homes. And being a man in this predominantly female business, I know I offer a unique perspective in decorating, one that tends to be overlooked.... the man's!

During a consult, if I'm lucking enough to get the man of the house for a second or two and ask what he likes or thinks about whatever project we're working on, I can't tell you how often I get "whatever...as long as SHE's happy". How pathetic is that? I'm not sure if it's societal thing that keeps him from expressing an opinion or perhaps he just really doesn't care.

None the less, I also have yet to meet a woman that doesn't adore a husband who understands the truly delicate balance of power in a home... i.e. when she's happy, HE'S HAPPY!

So I thought, on Father's Day, it might be nice to share a few tips from that ever elusive man's point of view. You might just find that incorporating a few of these into your design plans won't screw things up as badly as you think. You might even do it already without much thought. But, solid design practice, just like the principals of feng shui, always seeks balance between feminine and masculine elements. So here goes:

Black is the definitive masculine color (or lack of color). No matter the color scheme, always include something black in a room. It introduces male energy in even the most feminine of rooms, helps anchor the space and gives you a visual point of reference for other colors.... try a black picture frame, box, candlestick, or even window hardware.
Selective use of textures and materials can go a long way when adding masculine energy in a room. Uneven, rough surfaces and natural raw materials ground a space by bringing in nature and the outdoors (typically associated with male energy). Stone elements are quintessentially masculine.
Leather is a no-brainer element that introduces masculine energy in a room. Leather evokes all kinds of masculine associations from cowboys to biker dudes. The musky smell of leather brings another layer of masculinity to a room that isn't even visible.
Masculine energy is conveyed by shapes that have squared corners or sharp edges. Curvy or round objects evoke more feminine energy. Try and incorporate both in the space if you can.... For example, square coffee and side tables should have round decorative elements on them like lamps with curved bases & round shades or decorative round bowls.
Metal is unequivocally masculine. Furniture, art and accessories with metal elements always trend masculine. The fact that these items tend to come in square or rectangular shapes further enhances the male energy. Consider adding free-form, sculpted metal art or accessories in a space. They are a nice blend of masculine and feminine energy and offer a compromise.

So, as you tackle your next design project, give a nod to the man in your life. With thoughtful consideration and by adding some of the elements I've mentioned, you'll create a dynamic and inviting space that you love. And at the same time, you'll be stroking his fur without him probably even knowing it. Not only will he be happier as a result thinking he's given in to your decorating prowess... But you'll feel good knowing that he's more at ease with his surroundings because you took the time to consider him in your design plans.

FLORAL DESIGN TIPS FOR EVERYDAY DECORATING

So I was wondering who thinks arranging flowers is intimidating if not impossible? I admit that I've felt that way before. But I'm actually having quite a lot of fun now that I've taken the time to learn a few of the basics of good floral design. And just like any other decorating discipline, a good eye (...we all have that), patience (...not so much) and the right tools (...duh!) make any job easier.

The Greater Chicagoland Decorators Coalition group recently attended an open house style luncheon and seminar with one of our area's floral wholesalers, Flowers By Design in Carol Stream, IL. Owner Dana Plazyk was nice enough to show us her simple tips for making quick, easy, even on-the-spot arrangements that can work well in both staging and design applications.

I thought I'd paraphrase her expert advice here in hopes it inspires you to pick up and old arrangement or start from scratch to create a new masterpiece for your home or a client's. Today's faux florals aren't your "grandmother's plastic flowers". Don't be afraid to touch to see the advancements in PVC florals. It's amazing how real they not only look but feel.

Make your arrangement base by hot gluing floral foam block to an inexpensive ceramic tile, shiny side down. Cover the foam with sheet moss or spanish moss attaching with floral pins.

Start from the base and build in layers. Always cut floral stems at an angle for easier insertion into foam remembering to add a small amount of low heat glue to the cut tip to hold it in place when inserted. For the more expensive stems, cutting a little longer than necessary gives you some wiggle room if you need to adjust the length.

Depending on the desired look, take bushes of greenery with broader leaves. Snip off the individual tendrils and "fluff" by bending them into "S" shapes for a more natural appearance. Insert longer pieces around bottom of base leaving shorter pieces to randomly cover the top and sides. Repeat with another "bush" of different, contrasting leaves (different color or texture or both).

Add in twigs or sticks with berries for another texture and dimension. Sparingly use willow or other flowing twigs to add motion and height to the arrangement.

If you like the greens effect, simply make sure all areas of the base are covered and set your arrangement on a bookshelf or cabinets. Simply insert the base into an appropriate container filled with more foam as needed for the sides to cascade and you have a centerpiece.

If you decide to go further, add flower stems in the same fashion. Be careful not to be too symmetrical. Nothing in nature grows perfectly symmetrical. Imagine flowers or vines growing toward the light and you'll get the idea. Mix flower sizes, textures and shapes as you did with the greens to add dimension and visual interest. Generally, larger flowers trending toward the bottom of the arrangement and smaller more whimsical flowers toward the top will help avoid a design that is too "top heavy".

Always remember the "negative" space in your arrangement just as with your interior design projects. Not every area of the arrangement has to be filled. In fact, negative space allows you to see the movement and visual interest in the finished product.

Working on a plastic drop cloth or oversized garbage bag helps with clean up at the end. Simply fold up at the edges and throw away all clippings and mess from your work.

Don't skimp on tools. A good glue gun, heavy duty snips, floral wire and plastic zip ties are the basic necessities for any floral designer. The plastic zip ties help you bundle elements together in mini bouquet arrangements prior to inserting them into foam or attaching them to another base such as a wreath.

SPRING A HEADBOARD

Some of my friends call me "Martin Stewart" ala Martha but with the obvious nod to gender. I guess I do get crafty from time to time. I think anyone working in the staging and redesign industry has to be. Even as homeowners, if something is lacking we find ourselves forced to create or approximate it until the real deal can be found or afforded.

One of my favorite "crafty" projects is the creation of a headboard. Mine is more along the line of the illusion of a headboard. I have done it a few times now with great success for some of my staging and redesign clients.

In most cases, like the one pictured here, I've started with a blank wall or at the very least one painted a solid color. Since the bed is almost always the focal point of a well designed bedroom, I use paint to help draw the eye to the bed. I accentuate the bed by painting a "stripe" from ceiling to floor exactly as wide as the bed. A darker tone of the same color usually does the trick. (You could even paint a rectangle slightly above the bed the same width but why tape off more than you have to!). To get a clean, crisp line, I use painters tape and make sure to press down the edges (of the tape) with a flat head screw driver to virtually eliminate bleed.

After the paint is dry and I've removed my tape, I hang artwork above the bed. I leave just enough room for pillows to rest against the wall below the art. You can use a long, horizontal piece or I've also combined two or three identically framed pieces in a row to create the illusion of a headboard. Abstract art or objects could also be used to draw the eye to the faux headboard. Just be careful to secure whatever you use since it is right above the bed.

You're really only limited by your creativity and what's on hand. And that's it... another relatively quick, easy and green way to create the illusion of a headboard when you need one.

THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME

Believe it or not, I have found a whole new way to go Green. It's a great idea if you need instant curb appeal for a party or for real estate staging. Since I've seen this several times over the last week, I felt compelled to post about it. Tired of a dormant lawn or one filled with brown patches? Why not spray paint it?

Apparently an increasingly popular way to spruce up your lawn and on a budget is to spray paint it green. Companies are popping up all over the country that offer this service especially to improve the appearance of vacant or foreclosed properties. I could even see doing this for a party, wedding, or other outdoor event where you want the lawn to be a beautiful green but can't afford to re-sod, seed or pay huge water bills.

I know what your thinking. How can this kind of green be "green"? Actually, the product is not paint but a non-toxic green dye sprayed onto the existing lawn. You can even adjust the color intensity by adjusting the dye to water ratio. Athletic teams and golf courses have been doing this for years to ensure a beautiful, consistent turf. Now the idea is catching on with home and business owners.

Lawn painting instantly improves curb appeal by masking ugly, dormant or damaged lawn. the dye will dry in about one hour and will last up to 3 months or until the lawn is mowed. It is harmless to people, pets, wild animals and the planet.

While some may think this is deceitful or dishonest, it is no different than the other cosmetic improvements we stagers make to accentuate the positives and detract from the negatives of a property. It's not like someone isn't going to realize the lawn has had a little help to look its best for an open house. And it's not like you're covering up a structural defect or other safety hazard.

DECORATING-ORIGINS OF THE EASTER BUNNY

Springtime decor means fresh blossoms, bright green grasses and other iconic symbols of rebirth after a long winter. And few vignettes are complete without at least some nod to the Easter holiday with its colorful eggs and the legendary Easter Bunny.

Since I knew that Christians around the world celebrate Easter as the resurrection of Christ, I was just curious about the origins of the Easter Bunny that we use so often in our decorating this time of year. So I hopped (sorry) on the web to see how the heck this all came about. Turns out, the Easter Bunny story is about as complicated as the twists and turns of your favorite afternoon soaps!

Apparently, ancient Saxons celebrated the return of Spring with a boisterous festival commemorating the goddess of fertility and offspring, Eostre or Eastre. At the same time early Christian missionaries celebrated this holy day with observances that coincided with the pagan celebration. Just like Christmas, the line between the vastly different meanings for Easter was blurred.

But what about the human-like bunny of lore that hides or lays colorful eggs? Well I found out that, since antiquity, the egg and the rabbit (or hare) have been symbols of fertility. "Breeding like rabbits" comes to mind. So it makes sense that these busy little animals and their offspring would become symbolic of fertility and springtime.

The Easter Bunny himself is widely believed to have been derived from traditions brought to the New World by German immigrants to the Pennsylvania Dutch settlements in the 1700s. The character, much like Santa Claus, would leave gifts for good children on Easter eve. The bunny was believed to "lay" eggs because of it's nesting habits. Children would build "nests" in their hats and bonnets in anticipation of a visit from the Osterhase (German for Easter Bunny). The hats and bonnets have been replaced with our modern-day Easter basket.

So the next time you're setting up those Spring vignettes complete with brightly colored eggs, grass filled baskets, and delicious chocolate bunnies, you'll have a little better idea of just how convoluted the whole thing is. Eggs... Baskets... Bunnies, Oh My!

I'M GOING TO DECORATE THE WHITE HOUSE!

!!! APRIL FOOLS !!!

Hey...got your attention didn't I? Okay....maybe not so nice but I have a point. Truly, the only fools are the ones who fail to believe that anything is possible. Yes, it may be a stretch to think that the Obamas will be calling me tomorrow, but I learned a long time ago that anything is possible. And just about anything can happen, usually when you least expect it!

We all have our doubts along the way. My stuff isn't good enough for a "designer" look. I can't possibly afford to start from scratch. I love my hand-me-downs and other finds too much to get rid of them. It's only human nature to surround ourselves with treasures that make us feel good. The trick is to know how to use those treasures correctly to have a cohesive, polished look that still reflects your personal history and style.

So what is your latest excuse for not having the home of your dreams? Excuses for not succeeding are the easiest to invent. I just hope yours isn't because you are waiting to live in the White House before you call me to help!

THE DECORATOR IN YOU

This week marks the three year anniversary of my certification in redesign. I can't believe it has been that long. They say that time flies when you're having fun. While there are challenges to running a business, I'd say that's true! I've been having a blast!

Although I have dabbled in decorating for years, I actually didn't incorporate until the beginning of 2004. At the time, I had a business partner and we focused our business on color consultations, interior painting and faux finishes. The lessons we learned early on were many. Not to say that the learning has stopped. But it has gotten easier with time.

I took my classes with SDP Certified Trainer Judy Pelinksi. We laugh today because Judy remembers worrying about me as a prospective student. Apparently, as I was researching different classes, I asked Judy "what can you teach me that I don't already know?" While I didn't mean to sound conceited, I'm sure it must've sounded that way. All I can say is thank goodness you don't know what you don't know. Otherwise, I might never have gone after my dream. Today, I can't believe all that has happened. Those classes have really changed my life and Judy has been a Godsend in so many ways. As I look back, I can't believe that, in three short years, I have:

Ditched my business partner (actually he became a nurse)
Refocused the business on Redesign
Joined the Society of Decorating Professionals
Added Staging Certification
Launched a successful website
Published my work in two magazines
Presented at the SDP Annual Conference
Began a philanthropic program called "Healing Touches by Decor Designs"
Started blogging for TheDecoratingVoice.org
Worked to build Greater Chicagoland Decorators Coalition
Certified in Green Design thru the Chicago Center for Green Technology

....and the fun continues.

While I learned so much during my training, I think the things I learned weren't necessarily the things I thought I would. Gone are the days of feeling guilty for charging for my talent. Gone are the days of insecurity in my abilities and vision. The doors to a future I could hardly imagine have been opened. I know I have finally embraced my passion and I can't wait to see what opportunities await to make the world a more beautiful place.

All of this has been possible because I took a chance, invested in myself and refused to listen to those that were happier with the status quo. I'm thankful for those that have believed in me and helped me along the way. Spring is a time for change, rebirth and growth. I hope you make a change in your life that puts you on a path toward your greater good. What have you done in the past three years? I hope you have embraced the decorator in you.

TOP FIVE DECORATING MISTAKES

Working with clients in every income range offers me the opportunity to see how money (or lack thereof) can affect a person's decorating choices. Most often, I find that the same decorating mistakes are made regardless of how much money someone has to throw at a room.

So here are the TOP 5 DECORATING MISTAKES as I see them on almost a daily basis:

FURNITURE PUSHED UP AGAINST THE WALLS Why on earth are people so insistent that ever piece of furniture be pushed up along the walls? Contrary to what you might think, this does NOT make a room look any bigger. Instead, it makes it look like you've just finished a game of Wii or you're setting up for your next square dance. For goodness sake, try angling your furniture and pull it away from the walls to create intimacy and character.
ARTWORK HUNG TOO HIGH Unless you want to achieve an art gallery effect with large pieces of similar size, don't fall for the misconception that art should always be placed at "eye-level". Artwork is meant to be paired with items that create vignettes which most often means it should be lowered to "mate" with lamps, tables and sofas/chairs etc.. Consider that everyone is a different height while standing. But everyone (adults that is) sits at about the same height. When hanging artwork, make sure that it "connects" with other items in the room but also can be appreciated while seated
TOO LITTLE LIGHTING You can never have enough lighting in a room. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 6 sources of light in every room. This can include windows, lamps, recessed lighting, accent lighting, picture lights, candles etc.... A well designed space will also arrange key sources of lighting to create a triangle in the room. Dark corners come alive with the addition of a small accent lamp even on bookcases or tables. An uplight in the corner behind furniture or plants casts a warm glow and shadows add texture and layers to a room. Don't depend on one single overhead light to do the trick. This type of lighting is never flattering and creates voids in the room. Don't live in the dark. Even the most beautiful rooms can't be appreciated if they aren't well lit!
BOWLING ALLEYS Large rooms or open floor plans can challenge even the most experienced designer. Treating these large spaces as one can end up making the room feel like a bowling alley. So, just like any other problem, I find that breaking it up into smaller components makes it more manageable. You'll find that decorating large spaces is easier if you can create imaginary squares inside larger spaces then treat them as separate conversational or task areas. Rugs are always helpful in sectioning off spaces and give you an anchor for seating and secondary furnishings.
ACCESSORY ABUSE Just because you own it doesn't mean it has to be on display. Why not rotate accessories just like you do your seasonal decorations? This will give you a fresh look from time to time so that you don't grow tired of your rooms. Make sure you leave "blank" spaces both on walls and on tables and other surfaces. Your eye needs a place to "rest" between objects so that you aren't subconsciously annoyed by visual clutter and "noise". And always try to group artwork in even numbers for formal looks and odd for more informal looks.

Keep these mistakes in mind as you look at your rooms. When you're correcting these and other mistakes, try clearing out the room first and starting from scratch. That way, you won't be tempted to just move your problems around from one place to another.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN DIY DECORATING TOOLBOX

To me, going on a redesign or staging job without a well-stocked toolbox would be like trying decorate a room blindfolded. Even consultations go more smoothly if I have my toolbox handy for those little decorating emergencies. Here are some tips to build your own DIY Decorating ToolBox:

Start by going to the local hardware store to get the biggest, lightest weight one you could find. Make sure it has plenty of compartments for the myriad of little things you always need.

Now add the following:

Measuring tape… a nice sturdy metal one that should not bend when extended less that 4 feet. I also use one that includes fractional measurements written out so I don’t have to count those tiny lines.
Laser Level… these things are amazingly helpful when you need to line up several hooks for pictures or draw strait lines for painters.
Furniture Slides (felt bottom for hardwood floors and plastic for carpet) You can never have enough of these so you don’t have to keep moving them from piece to piece.
Small Bubble Level (to get those pictures just right and level furniture on uneven floors)
Wood shims (handy to level bookcases and other tall pieces on uneven carpet or flooring)
Compass (helps with directional bearings in unfamiliar surroundings ….bearings that may influence color choices and window coverings)
Hammer & Nails (all sizes)
Screwdriver (one with magnetic interchangeable heads)
Furniture Polish Wipes & Glass Cleaning Wipes & Clean Rags
Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (love these things for removing scuff marks)
Plastic zip ties (to bind unsightly electrical cords)
Snap-on cord covers for light fixtures or lamp cords that can’t be tucked away
Hercules Hooks (best “As Seen on TV” tool ever!!!) (eliminates need for stud finder)
Assorted dry-wall anchors both plastic and screw-in type
Picture Wire & Picture Hangers (all sizes)
Cup hooks
Felt stickers (for bottom of pictures or other items)
Extension cords (several lengths in brown and white)
Furniture touch up pens & permanent black marker
Pencil & Pen
Double-sided and Painter’s tape for taping down rugs and marking off etc...
Velcro
Goo-Gone works wonders on pesky price tag glue residue.
SuperGlue (for the occasional OOPS!)

As with any job, the right tools make tackling those Do-It-Yourself decorating projects a breeze!

FAST, CHEAP, QUALITY DECORATING

$$$ I'd love to know who came up with this play on words Fast, Quality & Cheap. I'd really love to give them credit here because I think it is a Universal Truth that can be applied to many aspects of life. Especially in terms of interior design and decorating projects, I think it's worth remembering.

I'm sure you've seen it before and it's really quite simple. It goes something like this:

If you want something FAST and CHEAP, it won't be QUALITY!

If you want something CHEAP and QUALITY, it won't be FAST!

If you want something QUALITY and FAST, it won't be CHEAP!

Interior design projects are rarely pain-free. There are always challenges and hurdles that must be overcome whether they be in workmanship, materials or price. Ironically, I know first-hand that Interior Redesign is one of the few exceptions to this rule where you actually can have all three elements at the same time.

Redesign makes the most of what you already own which saves you time. Reusing your existing furniture, artwork and accessories saves you money. And working with a professional Interior Redesigner gives you a quality designer look for a fraction of the cost of a traditional interior designer. I guess it is possible to have your cake and eat it too sometimes!

REDESIGNING RESOLUTIONS

So now that you've dragged out and dusted off those same tired old resolutions (you know the ones)... "I will lose weight. I will pay off my credit cards. I will quit smoking. I will double my business. I will ________" (fill in blank). Why not practice what you preach? Redesign these heirlooms for '09!

Don't just push your resolutions around and add a few new words! I'm talking a step by step redesign of your resolutions for a big, better New Year.

It's amazing how the steps to a successful redesign are more far-reaching than you'd think. Here's how you can apply them to your resolutions this year:

Clear the room. You can't get a fresh perspective on your life or surroundings til you get rid of the "old" look!
Find your focal point. If you don't know what you're supposed to be looking at, it's time to find the focus of what you want to accomplish in 2009.
Add your largest seating piece. Your life needs a foundation to build upon. What is your anchor? Why do you do what you do? Who would you be in your wildest dreams?
Create conversational groupings with other seating. Dialogue is a good thing in life. Talk to yourself (in private of course). But more importantly, talk to others. You can't grow as a person in a vacuum.
Add secondary furnishings. Make sure you have some tables. It's ok to put your life and troubles down from time to time. With proper placement, you'll always know it's within arms reach.
Add the artwork. Don't forget those dream boards. If you don't have your inspiration in front of you, your resolutions will be worthless by Jan 2nd.
Let there be light! Illuminate your resolutions from every angle. You've created a masterpiece of a plan. Don't lose beautiful opportunities in the shadows.
Accessorize. The best redesign step of all.... we love this step. But there's a reason this step is last. Accessorize too soon and you get lost in the little things and lose site of the big picture.

A New Year!!! A New Look!!!

It's seems like another year has flown by in so many ways. And as we reflect on the past twelve months and look forward to the next, it's not uncommon to plan for improvements both internal and external. Throw in a dose of economy in turmoil and the plot thickens even more.

What are you doing for you? What changes do you have planned for 2009?

I certainly hope that you aren't resigned to status quo simply because you think you can't afford a few cosmetic improvements to your home. Some of the most dramatic changes you can make to your home often cost the least.

My former redesign clients understand that you don't have to start from scratch in order to have a new designer look for less than the cost of a piece of furniture. By simply rearranging, repurposing and refreshing existing items, you can make a change that will both lift your spirits and satisfy one of those resolutions all at once.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la. Oh yes, it’s that time again. Every year, it hardly seems like the Christmas decorations have been down at all and it’s time to put it all back up again.

Growing up, we always had a fresh cut Christmas tree from the local market. Even though we had to wait til about mid-December to put it up for fear of it drying out by Christmas, it was always worth the wait. The smell of fresh pine filled the air better than any candle or potpourri.

Sadly, I have to admit that faux fir has been my tree of choice for over 20 years. The sheer convenience of a boxed tree coupled with two mischievous cats and a busy schedule make an artificial tree a lifesaver for me. And I’m not alone. An estimated 50 million American households decorate artificial trees for the holidays.

Evergreens have stirred more than Christmas memories in recent years as the debate between artificial and real has centered on which choice is greener. Depending on whom you ask, there is a wide range of opinion. Environmentalists will argue that natural and renewable, live trees are the better option. Not surprisingly however, their counterparts in the artificial tree industry claim far less carbon emissions because of the reusability factor for their products. It seems there is no clear cut winner because both require transportation from tree farms or Chinese factories.

Whether you have an artificial tree or buy one of the 30 million live trees sold in the U.S. each year, here are a few things to consider as you “deck your halls” this holiday season.

Unless you live in desert or tropical regions, live trees can be purchased first-hand at your local tree farm. Not only are these the freshest option, but they also create the least amount of carbon emissions for transportation.
Also consider that, if purchased with the root ball intact, live trees may be reused for several seasons if planted or kept in a container. I hope you have enough room and green thumb if you select this option.
Cut trees can be recycled. Every year, tens of thousands of trees are collected by local municipalities for recycling programs or to create wildlife habitat in man made lakes.
Artificial trees, while reusable, are generally produced with non-biodegradable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic which isn’t easily recycled because of various chemical additives.
Older artificial trees also container higher levels of lead which is dangerous if ingested by children or animals.
Artificial trees are generally more flame retardant if you like to leave your tree up more than a couple weeks.

Whatever your choice, have a happy, healthy holiday season enjoying all things red, gold and GREEN!

THANKFUL GIVING THROUGH DESIGN

Just in time for Thanksgiving and in the spirit of giving, I have just announced a community outreach program for my company called “Healing Touches by Décor Designs”. While I took my inspiration from projects by other SDP members, I had to find something that I felt passionately enough about to commit the time and energy. Healing Touches is the evolving result.

Healing Touches is an initiative that will let me give back to the local community through the gift of design. I will be working with and for individuals affected by chronic, life-threatening and debilitating illness. The goal is to facilitate physical and emotional healing through beautifully decorated spaces.

Numerous studies have shown that a person’s mental and physical well-being is often influenced by his/her surroundings. The program will offer complimentary redesign and related services to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated need and who, for various reasons, are unable to provide for or accomplish improvement projects that focus on esthetically beautiful and healthful surroundings.

While decorating projects can feel overwhelming at times, we often take for granted that we have been blessed with the finances or physical means with which to do them in the first place. But, everyone enjoys and benefits from beautiful design that promotes peace, prosperity and healing.

So, as we celebrate another Thanksgiving, I hope you too have found a way in which you can give back. I truly believe that a gift given without expectation of return always comes back anyway in ways you couldn't possibly imagine.

COLOR TRENDS FROM BENJAMIN MOORE

We’ve all heard it before. “If you don’t learn from past mistakes, you’re condemned to repeat them.” And, “what goes around comes around”. Well according to industry experts, the same holds true for paint colors.

I recently attended Benjamin Moore's “Color Pulse 2010” at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. Our speaker, Mary Hoffman, and the other color specialists with Ben Mo have determined that those lovely mauves, olives and golds of yesteryear are fighting for a comeback. They’ve already started to appear and will feature even more prominently in fashion and design as we head toward 2010. Think Brady Bunch kitchen and you can envision what we may be in for. God save us!

I am happy to report, however, that there are some encouraging color notes coming up. Look for resurgence in blues which have fallen out of favor for a number of years. The real color story will come from purple which is reportedly going to be THE color for 2010. Guess I was ahead of the trend when I chose shades of purple for my logo in 2004. Who knew?

Among others, here are some trends to watch for:

1- Expect yellows to be influenced by green with caramel reemerging. Golds and other metallics will also have a strong presence.
2- Reds will be blackened with purple and blue undertones. Red and white combos will be popular.
3- Greens will be fresher fusing with yellows and away from the sages.
4- Tonalities of beige and gray will also reclaim former glory.

You know what though? While it’s nice to be trendy, I wouldn’t run out and paint my living room purple just yet. Even if that is the color for 2010, I’d say it’ll probably be short-lived. As with other trends, if you wait long enough you’ll be “in”. Albeit somewhat boring, it’s always safe to stick with a favorite beige, taupe or tan and throw in a vase or pillow to pay homage to the current color trend.

All due respect to trends, I most often recommend that my clients pick colors they like and never be afraid to experiment. Ben Mo also says that "individuality" is a strong trend on the horizon. People will be seeking “one-of-a-kind” looks in clothing, home decor etc.... I say, why not leave your mark with color? After all, it’s only paint!

DECORATING ON A BUDGET

I met with a new client yesterday that seemed so frustrated by her decorating dilemmas that she was ready to throw it all away and start over. The funny thing to me is there is absolutely nothing wrong with her "stuff". When I told her that, she gave me this confused look that said, "What do you mean my stuff looks good?" So, after a little more explanation, she seemed relieved that it isn't as much her "stuff" as it is how she has chosen to use it. Actually, I wouldn't even mind a few of her pieces in my home!

I get that a lot in my line of work. Not secretly coveting my clients belonging (HA!)...but frustrated folks that just want that decorator look using their "stuff"! My experience has taught me that most people have great taste in furniture and accessories. Unfortunately, they just can't quite figure out why it looked so good in the showroom but doesn't quite sparkle at home. There's nothing to be embarrassed about, like this sweet woman. Better to ask for help if it means you don't have to keep throwing good money after bad.

So now that the client and I are on the same page, we have come up with a plan that I think addresses her immediate needs and fits her budget. As with all redesigns, our goal is going to be to make the most of what she already has by rearranging and repurposing it. That way we will save more than enough money to address the "structural" issues that need attention. With some fresh paint and hardware on the kitchen cabinets, a couple new light fixtures and maybe a new tile backsplash, we are going to create a fresh, new look that will only cost a fraction of what she had in mind.

Creating a new look for my redesign clients is always a challenge especially since my goal is to do it without buying a single thing. But the reward of the look on their faces when they see what I've accomplished using only their treasured belongings is worth the effort. Nothing makes a client feel more at home than the things that have made it home all along... just slightly improved!

I'd be lying if I said that making money isn't an obvious reason for being in business in the first place. Without wanting to sound too sappy, I do take home more than a paycheck however. I get paid knowing that what I've left behind means a lot to my clients and hopefully will be enjoyed and appreciated even after the money earned is long since spent.

WHICH ONE OF THESE IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS? A MAN ENTERS THE WORLD OF INTERIOR DECORATING

As a member of the Society of Decorating Professionals, I laughed more than once at last year's Annual Conference in Chicago when the assembled group was casually addressed as "ladies". As in, "May I have your attention, ladies?" What? Am I invisible? Even at this year's event in Phoenix, the feminine overtones were unmistakeable. I guess that's to be expected when I was the only man at a Decorating Conference two years running. Our keynote speaker, Terri Bowersock, even autographed a book for me with "the Ladies and Jeff".

I realize throwing a guy into a group largely made up of women inevitably changes the dynamic, at least a bit. It's just hard not to feel a little like the outsider when the only thing running through your mind is the Sesame Street ditty "One of these things is not like the others.... la la la". But you know, I've never shied away for fear of being different. One of my favorite quotes is from Oscar Wilde who said, "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken!"

It's no surprise that there are still strong gender lines in many industries. Redesign and Staging are perfect examples. I'm not sure of the number of men in these fields. But, while there are exceptions like myself, being a man in this business is like treading water in an estrogen ocean.

I'm a firm believe however that God given talents are gender blind. The real challenge is discovering and recognizing those talents. I know, without a doubt, that I'm blessed to have found an industry where I can express my creativity and talent while doing a job that I love. If having to work shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of equally talented women to get it done is my only sacrifice, I think it's well worth it.

REDESIGN VS. INTERIOR DESIGN

Ok... how do you know if you should hire and work with a Redesigner or an Interior Designer?

Unfortunately, it's not that simple to decide. The line between Redesign specialists and traditional Interior Designers can be blurry. Just like other trades, your end result can vary greatly depending on the skill and experience of either category of decorating professional. I know licensed Interior Designers that enjoy and focus on more redesign type projects. At the same time, I know Redesigners that enjoy tasks that are more typically associated with interior design.

Just to be clear, the basic difference between the two is that a traditional Interior Designer is trained and works with many mediums ranging from structural elements, to utilities, to window fashions, to flooring, to decor. Redesigners, in the strictest sense, specialize in cosmetic changes that make the most of your existing furniture, artwork and accessories. Your individual needs will help dictate what type of professional may be more qualified to help.

Many states also require Interior Designers to be "licensed". There is some discussion and debate where to draw the line. Much of that has to do with the fact that traditional Interior Designers work in areas that blur the line with Architects. I believe that since structural elements are involved, the argument has been made that this class of professionals requires regulation. I am not aware of any state, however, that currently requires interior decorators (i.e. redesigners) to be licensed. Of course, regulations vary from state to state and even county to county. So, that could change without much warning.

Ultimately you should be very comfortable sharing your spaces with professionals that have demonstrated what I call the Three T's:

Talented
Trustworthy
Timely

Are you more confused? Sorry. But, I would suggest you start by figuring out the scope of your project. Then research professionals in your area that specialize in your type of project. Check out trade organizations that can provide resources for you for both types of professionals. Here are a few of the larger ones:

American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)
Interior Redesign Industry Specialists (IRIS)
International Interior Design Association (IIDA)

My final piece of advise is this. You have to share the world with everyone else. But, your home is yours and your family's! Don't let anyone dictate to you how YOUR home should look. Make it your own regardless of the Redesigner or Interior Designer you work with.

Selling real estate quickly and for maximum profit, especially in difficult markets, is as much about selling the "dream" as it is about selling the house itself.

GREEN PAINT FOR DUMMIES

Got an upcoming home decorating project that requires painting? Well things have changed a lot in the paint business in the last few years and not all paints are created equal. If you are concerned about your health and the environment, check out a few of these ideas before selecting your paint.

Environmental pollutants called VOCs (volatile organic compounds) can affect your family's health. VOCs are emitted (off-gassed) by paints as they are applied and dry. To limit your exposue, here are three general categories of no (or low) toxicity paints. Of course, calling paint "non-toxic" is a relative term since, with paints and stains, it's more a matter of degree of toxicity. The three categories are:

NATURAL PAINTS These paints are made from natural raw ingredients such as water, plant oils and resins, plant dyes and essential oils, natural minerals such as clay, chalk and milk casein. If they are water based, they generally give off almost no smell. Those that are oil based take on the fragrance of the essential oil used. These paints are largely the safest for your health and the environment.
ZERO VOCs Any paint in the range of 5 grams/Liter or less VOCs can be called Zero VOCS. Be aware that some manufacturers may claim Zero VOC but these paints may still contain tints, biocides and fungicides that contain some VOCs. Adding colorant (tint) alone can sometimes add up to 10 grams/Liter (still quite low).
LOW VOCs Water based paints are obviously a better choice than their petroleum based counterparts when it comes to VOCs. Low VOC paints contain no or very low levels of heavy metals and formaldehyde. While they may still emit an odor when applied, that usually disappears quickly once dry. The amount of VOCs can vary greatly between brands and manufacturers and should be listed on the can. Low VOC paints are generally those with 50 grams/Liter or less.

New and improved paint that is more healthy and environmentally friendly is making a big splash in the market. Make sure you ask for it at your local paint retailer.
